Bridget Jones' Diary
Bridget Jones’ Diary is a bona fide chick flick, with very little to recommend it to the dodgy movie connoisseur, other than the fact that this is guaranteed to earn you brownie points. There is, however, one fight scene, which to be honest is probably one of the best fight scenes I have ever witnessed in a movie. While there are no martial arts, there are two average guys trying to beat the crap out of each other, and for most of the fight scene, failing miserably, as is typical in the real world.
As in any chick flick the underlying plot is a boy meets girl etc. In this one it’s going to take to long to describe as there are 2 boys, 1 girl, various intrigues, and a whole lot of me not actually caring enough to follow, never mind to try and write it down. But needless to say, the right 2 people get together in the end, and this makes almost everyone happy.
Dodginess
Without any real dodginess to speak of apart from cheesy romantic dialogue and an awesome fight scene it’s difficult to score Bridget Jones’ Diary any higher than a 2 on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Scale. As you may have noticed, I really like the fight scene between Mark Darcy and Daniel Cleever, so it’s not all that surprising that it gets awarded the dodgiest moment.
Rewatchability Rating
There are worse movies to watch, but to be fair, there are also a large number of better movies as well. You’re not going to want to watch this one more than about once every few months, unless you really, really need to score brownie points, and if you need them that badly, you’re probably screwed anyway. Bridget Jones’ Diary scores a 3 on the rewatchability index.
Most Memorable Quote
There are a lot of moments that are humourous, but none of them really stand out, except for the gay guy running into the Greek restaurant and yelling out “Fight, quick, it’s a real fight!” Although, on paper it doesn’t look that great, the way it’s delivered in the movie makes it a real stand out line.
Final Thoughts
You may hate it, you may love it, but it’s pretty much a certainty that at some point you’re going to have to watch it. It could be worse, you could be forced to watch Aeon Flux.
