The Bucket List

The Bucket list is a fantastic film with very little going for it to be recommended by Dodgy Movies. Reviewed. Having said that, Jack Nicholson is always good value, and the combination with Morgan Freeman really makes the film work

It’s a good thing that there is chemistry between Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman as roughly half the film takes place in a hospital room, and relies on the acting ability of these two to keep you enthralled and make you care about watching the rest of the film. To be fair, both Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson could have chemistry in a dark room by themselves.

Both actors find themselves dying from cancer, and they eventually decide to make a list and cross off all the items. This ultimately results in them both learning lessons, but not without some humourous interludes, which is just as well, otherwise it would fail to be uplifting at all.

Dodginess

The Bucket List isn’t dodgy at all, and gets a 1 on the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man scale. There aren’t really any dodgy moments to speak although the skydiving episode was pretty cool. The dodgiest moment has to be when Jack Nicholson finds out how Kopi Luwak is made. If you don’t know, google it, I guarantee you’ll find it amusing.

Rewatchability Rating

I’m really glad I saw The Bucket List as it is an outstanding piece of cinema. Unfortunately, it isn’t going to find its way into my DVD collection. It’s a little depressing to rewatch and so only rates a 1 on the rewatchability index.

Most Memorable Quote

I would have thought that a great film like this would have more memorable quotes, but the two that stuck with me are pretty great. The first, “I believe that more people die from visitors than diseases.” Anyone who’s met my family can understand why I like this one, but the best line in the movie relates to the problems with legal drug use. “Don’t give me the morphine while I’m sleeping. It’s a waste.”

Final Thoughts

Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson are always worth watching. Pair this with a great script and some awe inspiring scenery, and you have a real winner. Do yourself a favour and watch this one. I can pretty much guarantee it will be worth it.
