What Happens in Vegas
Often I find myself surprised by films. It’s normally in a bad way, but occasionally it’s a pleasant surprise. What Happens in Vegas was one such film. Admittedly going in with no expectations probably helped this, but it was very enjoyable.
The film followed the normal chick flick plot. Boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy does something stupid and loses girl, boy redeems himself, so no concentration was necessary. This was a good thing as the amount of laughter caused by the film would have made it difficult to concentrate on anything more complex.
Joy (Cameron Diaz) and Jack (Ashton Kutcher) are forced to live together. What follows can only be described as a series of misadventrues as the both try to end the marriage while getting control of the jackpot won in Vegas. The film delivered continuous laughs without having to resort to crudity, something I am starting to appreciate more and more. Walking out of a film feeling better than when you went in is always great and the happy ending delivers it, but then, that’s why Romcom’s do so well.
Dodginess
What Happens in Vegas only gets 3 Stay Puft Marshmallow Men of goodness. That said there are still a number of dodgy moments to appreciate. The removal of the toilet seat and the toilet door immediately spring to mind. However the two moments that really stand out both come right at the end of the film. The first is the flashback to the wedding chapel in Vegas when you see Hater and Tipper get together, a moment you’ve been expecting all film. But the best is when Tipper and Hater follow through on Tipper’s plan for revenge on Mason.
Rewatchability Rating
I really enjoyed this film the first time, and just know that I will find something to appreciate everytime, even if it’s not something new. This one rates a 5 on the rewatchability index.
Most Memorable Quote
The line that really stands out probably comes at the height of the war between Joy and Jack. “The topping I wanted on my popcorn. I know the box said it's movie theater butter, but you guessed it. What I really want is sweaty Jack's balls flavour.” Jack, after tipping the bowl of popcorn into his pants. “I'm just giving you what you want, baby.”
Final Thoughts
I enjoy feel good romcoms almost as much as I enjoy dodgy superhero films, and this one is one of the better ones I have seen recently. I can easily recommend it and can pretty much guarantee that it will find its way into my DVD collection.
